There are many different genres within the metal scene. Not contented with being labelled ‘deathcore’, Impending Doom came up with their own one called ‘Gorship’. Now this needs clarifying as "Gorship" is about worshiping God through their gore sounding music; not actually worshiping "gore"!

This is the first solo album by Michael Phillips, but it’s definitely not his first outing. Mike has appeared on lead guitar with the mighty Deliverance on ‘Stay Of Execution’ (1992), ‘Live In The Studio’ (1993) and ‘As Above, So Below’ (2007). In the gap, he was guitarist for Fasedown on their self-titled debut ‘Fasedown’ (2001) and ‘Blitz Of Anguish’ (2004). He has pulled in a whole host of friends for his solo album ‘Mirrors Within Mirrors’ (2009).

Most artists start with an EP or two and then build up to a full-length album. But Steve Yost does not follow that train of thought, and doles out a double CD for starters. The hard rock style and lyrical content harks back to the seventies Jesus Music era of Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill and Phil Keaggy.

When you hear certain phrases, you are bound to get a reaction. For example, ‘For Christ Sake’ is seen as offensive and bound to upset most christians. However, the band uses it in the context of 2 Corinthians 12:10 "That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." So get over it.

In God We Trust – Roads Not Taken
It just goes to show that you can’t always trust your first impressions! I thought that a band called ‘In God We Trust’ would be from America (especially as those words are on their currency). Instead IGWT are a five-piece band from Marl in Germany. Having started out as a pop punk act in September 2007, they found themselves gravitating towards melodic hardcore.

The year 2010 will be remembered as the year my view on Greece changed. The stereotype image of sun, sea and islands will likely remain, while the actuality of economic crisis, the bloody strikes and that amazing retirement at 53(!) will likely be forgotten somewhere in the next couple of years. But I can’t imagine that I will ever forget the joy I found in ‘No Tuning Back’, the fifth album of InnerWish.

The average metalhead will agree with me that metal is timeless. At least… in our dreams that is… Occasionally, metal evolves as time passes on. In many cases, it will cause revival of old memories. And then there is a handful of releases that will actually put you in a time-machine, bringing you back in history. ‘Dark Night Of The Soul’ of Last Rites is such a release, that pushes you back to early nineties…

It’s funny to see how interpretations change as years go by. Ten years ago you were ‘outdated’ if you still played early-nineties-thrash-metal from the Bay Area-category. The trend was ‘death’, so thrash was a little too ‘mellow’. Nowadays it’s no longer a shame to honour the heroes from the early days. Deuteronomium’s ‘Retaliatory Strike EP’ is the latest proof.
